Cleaning of Pipe for the Centrifugal Casting Industry

Problem:

Clean the OD and ID surfaces of centrifugally cast pipe to remove molding compounds, ceramic wash and other surface contaminants and produce a near white metal finish (SSPC-SP 10).

Solution:

At Industrial Associates we offer a full range of metal finishing services including the manufacturing of machinery, equipment repair, and media services. We worked with this customer to design, build, and integrate a 3-axis carriage for the lance assembly that allows various sizes of pipe to be processed. For outer diameter cleaning, each section of pipe is placed on a sled so that it can pass through a Bronco 4-wheel roll conveyor machine to clean the pipe without rotation. At the exit end of the OD blast machine, we designed and manufactured an unsupported, rotating lance assembly that traverses the length of the pipe as it moves forward and cleans the inner diameter. On the withdrawal phase of the lance, air blows out the excess abrasive from inside the pipe diameter.

An OD from 7″ to 60″ and pipe length of 12′ to 14′ can be accommodated by this machinery. Turnaround time for this project was 1 year including concept phase, design, fabrication, and trials for full analysis. The equipment was fully tested for functionality and delivered to the customer in southeast Wisconsin.
